Hoodie and Sweatshirt Weight: How to Read oz and GSM
Compare fabric weights in the same units and use a sample to judge the finished hoodie or sweatshirt.

GSM means grams per square meter of fabric. Ounces per square yard, written oz/yd², measures the same property in different units. Neither number is the weight of the entire hoodie. Before comparing two listings, confirm that both numbers describe fabric weight.
Convert fabric weight with one formula
Multiply oz/yd² by approximately 33.906 to get GSM. Divide GSM by 33.906 to get oz/yd². This calculation follows the conversion factor published in NIST Guide to the SI, Appendix B.8.

These are unit conversions, not industry categories or measured values for a particular B&S garment. If a product says only “12 oz,” ask whether it means ounces per square yard before applying the table.
Read the product specification as a whole
The H9002 Heavy Fleece Hoodie and H9007 Heavy Fleece Sweatpants list 400 GSM fabric and a 60% cotton, 40% polyester blend. Their product names or descriptions also use a rounded 12 oz designation. Mathematically, 400 GSM is approximately 11.8 oz/yd². For a job with a strict fabric-weight requirement, request confirmation of the specification and acceptable tolerance.
A matching weight does not mean a matching garment. Compare the actual fabric face, inside surface, seams, hood and cuffs as applicable. A sweatshirt and a hoodie made with comparable fabric still have different construction and decoration areas.
What weight cannot decide for you
- Fit: the size chart determines dimensions; GSM does not.
- Artwork placement: a pocket, seam or hood may affect where your decorator can place a design.
- Wearer preference: judge the feel, room for layering and finished appearance on a sample.
- Decoration approval: the exact fabric, color and production process still need to be assessed together.
- Order quantity: a weight specification does not tell you the selling pack or carton quantity.
Use a short fleece comparison sheet
For each candidate, record the style number, listed fibers, fabric weight with its unit, garment measurements, available color and intended decoration position. Add a column for questions that the product page does not answer. This makes an unresolved specification visible before it becomes a production assumption.
Then compare physical samples in the intended use. For an indoor staff garment, try it with the expected layers. For merchandise, look at the unprinted garment and an approved decorated sample. Ask the wearer to comment on specific features, such as body length or hood bulk, rather than treating a heavier number as an automatic upgrade.
What if two listed weights do not agree?
Do not average them or silently choose the larger number. Send the supplier the style and both figures, and ask which specification applies. If weight is a purchase requirement, put the confirmed unit and value in the order brief.
